Talents

This week is Commitment Sunday at TULC.  The Gospel reading is Matt 25 :14-30, which is about the master who went away leaving his servants / slaves with 5 /2/ or 1 Talents, each according to his ability.

Talents were worth about 6000 denarii, where a denarii was 1 days work for a laborer. So a talent is over 15 years labor or in today's terms assuming $30000/yr. for laborer = $450,000.  This was big bucks!

I read that Talent's meaning was changed or added to in the middle ages to the talent we now use as abilities.

As hard as it is to believe sometimes, God gave all of us talents or abilities which we are to use for His work.  The slave who covered up his ability was the one who was censored.  It reminds of the song "This Little Light of Mine" in one version has a verse "Hide it under a bushel? No!, I'm gonna let it shine."

Don't waste that $450,000, let it shine let it shine!
